As many people have heard by now, there's been recent findings about the medication Paxil, specifically related to side effects from the drug that had previously not been made known to the public. The studies done on Paxil, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor prescribed to individuals to treat depression, anxiety, stress and obsessive compulsive disorders, show that pregnant women in particular should not take the drug. Research done on Paxil has indicated that there is a risk of Paxil birth defects when taken by women during the first trimester of their pregnancy. This news has come as a shock to thousands of former Paxil patients and their families.
These families have gone through the birth of a baby suffering from health complications, such as neural tube defects, patent foramen ovale, undescended testes, patent ductus arteriosus, interrupted aortic arch and double outlet right ventricle. In many cases, they were unaware these conditions had been caused by something or if they had, what that cause might have been. After hearing about the information that linked these and other health problems to Paxil use in pregnant women, these families began to come to the realization that all of these problems could have and should have been avoided had they received adequate warnings about the medication.
